Invented in 1941 by German-born chemist Peter J. Schlumbohm, the Chemex Coffeemaker was designed with the science of heat in mind. In 1956, it was selected by the Illinois Institute of Technology as one of the best designed products of the modern era. Utilizes laboratory-grade glass and a scientist’s knowledge of heat and chemical reaction. It has also earned a place in the permanent collections of the Museum of Modern Art, the Smithsonian, the Corning Museum, and the Philadelphia Museum of Art.
